Between consciously crafted and the vastness of context: collateral paratextuality and its implications for translation studies

This article presents a refined theory of paratextuality and bridges the gap between Kathryn Batchelor’s understanding paratexts as “consciously crafted threshold” risk paratext’s “collapse into vastness ‘the context’” through new form paratextual relationship: collateral paratextuality. Doing so facilitates investigations how audiences engage with complex constellations materials in digital spaces, rather than analyzing isolation. Such an approach is particularly relevant within translation studies given proliferation media content across linguistic cultural borders our increasingly networked algorithmically mediated world. To demonstrate utility paratextuality, this concludes case study teaser trailer for Netflix’s Dark hosted on YouTube, where coalescence from different creators, YouTube’s mediation thereof, personalized nature platform both justifies necessitates approach.
